Spring story ほかBrambly Hedge

画像0701 003.jpg

The Secret Staircase (1983)、The High Hills (1986)、Sea Story (1990)、Poppy's Babies(1994)、Wilfred to the Rescue(2005)、A Year In Brambly Hedge(2010)など(これら以外にも複数あるみたいですが)、多くのBrambly Hedgeシリーズが出版されています。

[Spring story]
It was the most beautiful morning. The spring sunshine crept into every cottage along Brambly Hedge, and the little window in the tree were opened wide.
All the mice were up early, but earliest of all was Wilfred, who lived with his family in the hornbeam tree. It was Wilfred’s birthday.
Jumping out of bed, he ran into his parents’ s room, and bounced on their bed till they gave him their presents.
“Happy birthday,Wilfred,” said Mr.and Mrs,Toadflax sleepily.
He tore off the pretty wrappings , and scattered them all over the floor. His squeaks of excitement woke his brother and sisters.
(後略)
( crept into:(ここでは)すみずみまでふりそそぐ、という感じでしょうか、Brambly Hedge というところは、木の中にマイスさんたちの各コテージが高層住宅みたいに入っているマイスの複合住み家なんですね。 All the mice were up early:(ほとんどの)ねずみたちは早起きだが、 hornbeam tree:シデの木(どんな木がは絵で見てね)、 Wilfred:主人公のねずみの一人、 bounced on their bed till they gave him their presents.:両親が彼にプレゼントを渡すまでベッドの上で飛び跳ねた、 tore off:やぶる、 scattered them all over the floor:それら(包み紙・ラッピング)を部屋中に撒き散らした、 His squeaks of excitement woke his brother and sisters:彼の興奮した騒ぎ声は弟や妹を起こした→彼の興奮した騒ぎ声で弟や妹が目をさました)

The flour mill, further down the stream, was run by the miller, Dusty Dogwood. Dogwood was his family name, but he was called Dusty because he was always covered from tail to whiskers with flour dust.
He was a cheerful and friendly mouse, like his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather,who had all run the mill before him.
He loved the fine weather, and strolled up and down the stream, chatting to the paddlers and dabblers.
His walks took him past Dairy, where he would often see Poppy standing by the stream, looking very pretty.
(中略)
Early in June, Miss Poppy Eyebright and Mr.Dusty Dogwood officially announced their engagement. Everyone along the hedgerow was delighted.
(後略)

(The flour mill:水車の製粉場, further down the stream:小川のはるか下流、 run:営なむ・運営する、 Dogwoodでもmouseです、 whiskers:ヒゲ 、~~~who had all run the mill before him:彼が受け継ぐ前は、ひいおじいさん、おじいさん、父と、代々にわたって水車の製粉場を運営されてきた、 chatting to the paddlers and dabblers:paddle=浅瀬でばしゃばしゃする・浅瀬を歩く・舟をこぐdabble=水遊び、ですが、ここでは浅瀬で水遊びしている人達(mouseたち)と楽しく話しながら、 engagement:婚約)

there was a lot of noise coming from the hornbeam tree next door. The Toadflax children had never seen snow before.
“ It’s snowing! It really is SNOWING! “
squeaked the two boys, Wilfred and Teasel. They chased their sisters Clover and Catkin round the kitchen, with pawfuls of snow scooped from the windowsill.
“ Suppertime!” called Mrs.Toadflax firmly, ladling hot chestnut soup into four small bowls.
After supper the children were sent off to bed, but they were far too excited to sleep. As soon as the grown-ups were safely occupied downstairs, they climbed out of their bunk beds to watch the snowflakes falling past the window.
“Tobogganing tomorrow,” said Wilfred.
“Snow pancakes for tea, “ said Clover.
“We’ll make a snow mouse, “ said Catkin.
“And I’ll knock it down!” said Teasel, pushing the girls off their chair.
(後略)

(next door:隣の家、 had never seen snow before:いままで一度も雪をみたことがない、 It’s snowing:雪が降っている、 with pawfuls of snow:子供ねずみの手一杯の雪は、エエト、ホンのちょっとでしょうね、 ladle:お玉でよそる、 hot chestnut soup:どんなものか食べてみたいですね、 far too excited to sleep:眠るには興奮しすぎていた、 grown-ups were safely occupied downstairs:大人たちが(子供達にとって)安全な階下の位置につくと、Tobogganing:トボガンというソリにのる遊び、 snow mouse:雪だるまsnow manのマウス版)

Primrose woke early that summer morning. She dressed quickly and tiptoed down to the kitchen. Her mother was already up, packing a raincloak and hat into a small bag.
“Off you go “ she said. “ Take this apple to eat on the way. We’ll see you later to say goodbye.”
Outside the sun was already warm, and a light breeze stirred the leaves and branches of Brambly Hedge.
“ Perfect,” said Primrose, “Just right for an adventure. “
She ran across the field, through the long grass and down ton the stream. There she found Dusty, Poppy and Wilfred hard at work, loading provisions on to Dusty’s boat.
“ Here you are at last,” said Dusty, “ I was beginning to think we’d have to you bihind.

(tiptoed down:しのび足で降りる、 Raincloak:雨用の袖なしの肩掛けコート(今はあまり用いない)、 Off you go:行くのね(という感じだと思います)、 on the way:途中で、 light breeze stirred the leaves and branches:さわやかな(そよ)風が木々や枝を揺らしている、 Just right for an adventure:まさに冒険日和ね、 hard at work, loading provisions on to~忙しくはたらいて食料などの旅の準備品をDustyの舟に運び入れていた、 Here you are at last:来たね、とうとう、 I was beginning to think we’d have to you bihind:君を置き去りにして出かけなければならないかと心配し始めていたところなんだ )
